Lyhty - Lothlórien - Lantern

Kun olin verkkoyhteisö Konnun vuotuisessa päätapahtumassa The Miitissä heinä-elokuun vaihteessa, sain Tarua Sormusten Herrasta lukiessani vision, kuin joku olisi avannut pääni ja kaatanut sen sinne. Ei, se ei ollut uskonnollinen kokemus, ainoastaan innoittava hetki. Lueskelen toisinaan joitain palasia kyseisestä kirjasta, tällä kertaa ne kaksi kappaletta jotka kertoivat saattueen vierailusta Lothlórienin valtakuntaan. 

"Aurinko oli laskemassa vuorten taa ja varjot syvenivät metsissä kun saattue lähti taas jatkamaan matkaa. Heidän polkunsa vei nyt tiheikköihin joihin hämärä jo oli ehtinyt. Yö saapui puitten alle heidän kävellessään ja haltiat paljastivat hopealamppunsa." Sormuksen Ritarit, Galadrielin peili.

Kannike on tehty mm. Uudessa Seelannissa kasvavan saniaispuun puhkeavan lehden muotoon.

Halusin tehdä kynttilälyhdyn, joka sisältää Lorienin symboliikkaa ja toistaa sen oleellisia teemoja. En suinkaan ajatellut tehdä mitään viimeisen päälle sliipattua, saati hopeista lyhtyä, vaan varaston nurkassa lojuvista metallilangoista ja erilaisista metallikierrätyspaloista.

Tein muutamia konseptiluonnoksia jo samana päivänä, jatkoin niitä vähän vielä seuraavana päivänä, kunnes pääsin kotiin ja materiaalieni kimppuun. Tein ohuesta teräspellistä, jota oli jäänyt noin 10cm halkaisijan palanen, pohjan lyhdylle. Taoin siihen keskelle syvennöksen tuikulle ja porasin 19 käyttämäni rautalangan vahvuista reikää. Yksi niistä osoittautui tarpeettomaksi, mutta väliäkö tuolla. Oli tärkeää jättää joidenkin vierekkäisten reikien väliin kynttilän verran tilaa, jotta ei kävisi nolosti. Viilasin myös pienet lovet levyn reunaan, kunkin reiän kohdalle, jotta lanka pysyisi aloillaan.

Sen jälkeen otin neljä reilun metrin mittaista palaa rautalangasta, taitoin ne kahtia ja työnsin päät levyn läpi. En työntänyt niitä vierekkäisistä rei'istä, vaan jätin yhden väliin. Sen jälkeen vedin langat tiukasti tulemaan reunaa myöten lovien kohdalta ja aloin tehdä niistä epäsymmetristä verkkoa. Huippua kohti tultaessa väänsin langat kiertymään spiraalille, toistensa ympärille ja lopulta muodostaen kannikkeen lyhdylle. Oli tärkeää leikata langat tasaisin välein, jotta kannike ohenisi oikein. Sitten lykkäsin jäljelle jääneistä rei'istä kuparilankaa ja solmeilin sen sinne sekaan.

Jos miettii, että mikä tekee Lothlórienista erilaisen metsän kuin mikään muu, niin vastaus on puut. Kultalehtiset Mallorn-puut, joilla on hopeanharmaa runko. Niinpä leikkasin liki paperin ohuesta kuparista eri kokoisia kolmihaaraisia lehtiä karoineen, joista kiinnitin ne lankojen muodostamaan kehikkoon. Viimeinen silaus koko hommalle on kuparin "marinointi", eli oikealta termiltään hapettaminen tai patinointi. Ruostuessaan kupari saa kauniin vihreän värin, joten tehostan prosessia käyttämällä kananmunan muodostamaa rikkiä. Saa nähdä miten onnistuu. Suljin lyhdyn juuri muovipussiin, jossa on myös lasipurkissa rikottuna yksi raaka kananmuna. Päivä tai pari on ennusteeni. Jännittää.

Mitä varten tämä on? Tunnelmavaloksi sisälle tai lasitetulle parvekkeelle. Pitäisi tehdä lasisysteemit ja kaikki, jos ulkona meinaisi polttaa.

Olen tehnyt myös toisen lyhdyn - kyllä, Tolkienin haltiateemalla jatketaan, mutta se lyhty kantaa salaisen valtakunnan tunnuksia.

English Summary

On the end of July I participated in Kontu's (a tolkien oriented webcommunity "Shire") meeting. There I laid my eyes on the two chapters of LOTR about Lothlórien. From there I got the inspiration to make a elven lantern of that theme.

After scetching and dreaming of it for a few days, I began the real work. I took about 10cm in diameter round, thin steelplate, coldforged a place for a small candle and drilled 19 small holes to the sides. I also filed small cracks on the edge of the plate, next to the holes. Then I cut four, about one meter long pieces of steel wire (same I used once on maille), and put them through the holes and started making a fancy mesh out of them.

The ceiling looks quite living with this lantern.

Once the mesh looked quite good, I gathered the odds and ends of the wires into a bunch and twisted them around each other, and formed a handle. I also added four copperwires to give some more looks and structure. Once done with that, I cut small Mallorn-leaves from very, very thin copperplate. Man, it was like paper! Then I attached the leaves to the lantern and it was almost done. At the moment I'm giving the copperleaves the final touch, by exposing them to sulpuric fumes of rotten egg. I hope that will turn the leaves green. Why tell more, when the photos says it all?

I have also made another lantern. Yes, of course it's a elven lantern. It bears the symbols of the hidden city.

Elven armour 2.0 - Our hopes and expectations

First of all, new pics and details. And ... A video!



I'll go through my plans for the elven armour, or just some detailed information on each photo. All photos and the video are taken by Tuomas Blom, a hilarious lad back from the days we were young and had no worries. Or atleast we had different kind of worries.

If you evaluate the costume as a whole, I think it's not quite in balance. One day, I'm going to make the legarmours, or "cuisses" and "greaves". Maybe even sabatons. All of them would be very light and flexible. They'd only face forward, so that I wouldn't lose mobility too much. When they are done, I can apply to Mr Tincan 2011-contest.

So, to those who haven't commented this in FB, which one You prefer?

Well, on this one there's not much to tell. It's a closeup on my spaulder, nothing special. Move along, citizen.

The braceres are very early work, made for archery. There is the mallorn-leaf of Lorien embossed and painted, as well as my name in Angerthas-runes.

I made the scabbard for my Albion Liechtenauer- sword. It's made of the same old veggie-tanned 2,4mm cowhide. It also holds some exotic leather: python. No, I did not get it from black market. There's a little story behind it. I guess it was 2008 when someone had tried to smuggle alive pythons to Finland. Fortunately, the finnish customs caught the bastards. The pythons were dead and somehow my favorite leather supplier Kemin Nahkatarvike got to buy the dead snakes from the officials. I happened to call them once as I was trying to get something interesting for my mother's christmas present. So I ended buying very expensive python leather for myself and much cheaper Nile perch skins for mum's crafts.  But yea, the scabbard - it's got no wood inside. I just wrapped the moist leather and stretched it around my protected sword. What would Freud say? Never mind. Then I sew up the whole thing and glued the decors, made the embossing and paint it. Finally I attached the suspension straps, to which I got the idea from a true master.

In the middle of the helm, the seam of the front- and backpieces, shall be remade. Maybe I'll sew it with copperwire and reinforce with proper rivets. The funny looking green frankenstein-rivet shall give room.

See the highlighted areas? They are problematic. The highest panel shold be over the one under it. I really gotta figure out a way to keep it from sliding.

The second issue is the lowest parts. I really don't like the idea of bellybutton peeking from my armour. That would be stupid and gross. Maybe I'll fix it with couple of rivets and by attaching the hipguards to the breastplate for good. Now it's a problem to dress up, then it would be a logistic problem.

Someone once said, if there's a woman in the house, the house is never done. If I don't get this finished one day, I guess I'm gonna have to start wearing a skirt. Hmmm... considering this summers heat, a kilt wouldn't be a bad idea actually ;-)
